This year, the essay topic is “Traditions are passed down from one generation to another. Many times, traditions shape the family structure, and in some cases, life choices. What traditions that have been passed down have helped prepare you for the future that you may someday pass down?”

Wellmore of Lexington has begun accepting applications for their annual Silver Pen Writing Competition. Every year, this writing competition awards three local high school seniors with scholarships ranging from $500 to $2,500. The deadline to apply is February 12th, 2021.

The Silver Pen competition is open to high school seniors who live or attend school within 25 miles of Wellmore of Lexington, employees of Wellmore of Lexington, and their families, and community residents’ immediate family.

Participants are required to submit an essay with a minimum of 1,000 words, the application form, and a transcript to be considered. “The Silver Pen Scholarship is an extraordinary opportunity for our Members to connect with our local community in a meaningful way,” says Crystal Butcher, Wellmore of Lexington’s executive director.

Members at Wellmore of Lexington play an essential role in this competition as they choose an essay topic and judge the competition. Each year, a panel of judges decide on a topic that is an intergenerational theme, connecting both Members and the applicants. Wellmore of Lexington prides itself on maintaining transparency throughout this process. To keep the competition fair the essays will be sent to Homestead Hill’s parent company, The Maxwell Group, where all the personal identifiers will be redacted. The panel then assesses the essays based on research, insight, perspective, theme, inspirational quality, meaningful personal connection, creativity, and clarity of ideas.
